Obesidad general y abdominal en mujeres de Hermosillo: prevalencia y factores de riesgo

Resumen

Objetivo: analizar la asociación entre las variables sociodemográficas, reproductivas, estilo de vida y obesidad general y abdominal en mujeres no embarazadas, residentes de Hermosillo, Sonora. Metodología: en 2005 se llevó a cabo una encuesta representativa transversal de base poblacional a mujeres de entre 25 y 54 años (n=1 239). Resultados: la prevalencia de obesidad general (índice de masa corporal) fue de 39.8% (intervalo de confianza [IC] 95%, 37.1%-42.6%). La preponderancia de obesidad abdominal (índice cintura-cadera y circunferencia de cintura) fue de 56.3% (IC 95%, 53.5%-59.1%) y 62.9% (IC 95%, 60.1%-65.6%), respectivamente. En general, la obesidad tuvo una relación positiva con la edad y estuvo inversamente asociada con la educación. El estatus marital y el uso de tabaco también se asociaron con la obesidad abdominal. La actividad física recreativa fue la única variable relacionada con las tres medidas de obesidad que se analizaron e indica un efecto protector. Valor: se trata de un estudio poblacional que evalúa la obesidad con medidas objetivas. Conclusiones: con el trasfondo del creciente problema de obesidad en la región, estos datos muestran una preeminencia elevada de obesidad general y abdominal en las mujeres de Hermosillo y destacan el rol protector de la actividad física.
