Abstract
Desde la década de 1960, con la difusión masiva del libro La primavera silenciosa, de Rachel Carson, sobre los efectos adversos de los plaguicidas sobre el medio natural, comenzó un auge de la conciencia ambiental, que incluyó la idea de sostenibilidad, a partir del Reporte de la Comisión Mundial sobre Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo, mejor conocido como Reporte Brundtland (1988). Así, de los desiertos y semidesiertos que ocupan 36% de la superficie de los continentes —aproximadamente 48 millones de kilómetros cuadrados— más de nueve millones se habrían originado por la acción humana. La problemática de la desertificación se inscribe dentro del manejo sostenible de los ecosistemas. El término "desertificación" fue utilizado por primera vez en 1949 por el francés André Aubreville.
