Abstract
La palabra "narcotraficante", neologismo que privilegia en su etimología la asociación con el tráfico de drogas narcóticas y deja de lado las que no lo son, aunque también sean ilícitas, surge a finales de los años cincuenta en la prensa de la Ciudad de México y su empleo es raro. A partir de los años setenta, la palabra "narcotráfico", para designar el fenómeno que integra todas las fases del negocio ilícito, se usa con mayor frecuencia en el lenguaje oficial y adquiere carta de naturalización en los medios de comunicación, y por lo mismo en las percepciones del sentido común. El prefijo "narco" será empleado posteriormente como multiplicador de etiquetas estigmáticas. Importará más la pirotecnia retórica que la precisión conceptual. La palabra inadecuada y cacofónica "narcocorrido" pasará a formar parte de las categorías elementales del discurso dominante del sentido común acerca del tráfico de sustancias ilícitas.Open access policy
