Abstract

This paper explains the case study methodology as a strategy to organize and provide information about qualitative works. In particular, it reflects on the use of this method in municipal studies that have been published recently in Mexico. This work is organized in three parts: the first one approaches the particularities of the case study methodology as a methodological tool: its history, problems and some general thoughts. The second part examines the recent bibliography on local governments in Mexico and discusses about the use of this method in these works. The last part exemplifies the use of case study in research on local governments in the Estado de México by analyzing these theoretical and methodological aspects. The final reflections focus on the casuistic discussion studies and their use in urban and municipal research in Mexico.
