Abstract
The present research aims to determine the amount of solid waste generated by six municipalities in the State of Zacatecas, Mexico, and compare their percentage composition by weight and volume. The results show the complexity of treatment and disposal of solid waste (SW) for both rural and urban municipalities, due to the large amount of sw generated, as well as changes in consumption patterns. This research also reveals a high potential to initiate sw reduction, recycling, reuse and energy recovery projects in the municipalities analyzed. It can also serve as an aid to evaluate the beginning of joint municipal action for the treatment and disposal of waste. This research aims to contribute to the understanding of the problems associated with waste disposal in the State of Zacatecas.
