Assimilation and social integration: a case study of returning migrant minors settled in northern Mexico’s border cities

Abstract

Anti-immigrant policies implemented in the United States, in addition to the effects of the economic crisis of 2008, have increased the return to Mexico of many migrants, who return with their children. This article analyzes minors’ level of assimilation and social integration; consequently, it is limited to knowing the views of those who, along with their families, have settled in Tijuana, Nogales and Ciudad Juarez. The Survey on transnational families, education and employment was conducted, which was complemented with interviews with migrant minors. It was a case study and not about a statistically representative population. This paper provides information which leads to the understanding of the return migration to Mexico phenomenon. It shows that social interaction among minors is weak, as well as their pessimism concerning the working future; their main purpose is to return to the United States.
