Abstract

This article analyzes crucial patterns of current research on geography and its relationship to environmental issues. Our key question addresses the institutional presence of a field that is presumed to be emerging: environmental geography. We also review the basic concepts of geography and its historical relationship to the notion of environment, as well as the associated academic practice. The origins and development of environmental geography are examined, based on a thorough historiographical literature review with emphasis on material published online. We conclude with some ideas about the potential contribution of geography to the study of environmental issues, with emphasis on the situation in Mexico.
